A Father’s Work
Meet Shawn Proctor!
Shawn is currently an FII family partner in Cambridge, MA. His cohort is in its second year with FII. He enjoys being in a group that shares similar goals and believes that the monthly team meetings help keep each other accountable.
During his time with FII, he has been able to save money and take care of daily expenses at the same time. Also, it allowed him to do some things that he normally wouldn’t have been able to do. For example, he was able to enroll his son in a summer camp that they had been wanting to try, but was more expensive than the camp he usually attended. It made the difference between sending him to the regular camp and one which matched his son’s interests.
Shawn has been involved with the local community for many years. His work centers around supporting families. From helping families set and meet goals with their children, to leading fathers’ support groups at a local parent education program. As a father facilitator, he helps fathers connect with each other and break the isolation of parenting. He believes that in supporting fathers, the whole family benefits.
The National Narrative Shifters are FII families that want to take the lead on advocating for FII’s approach of direct investment in family initiative and fostering of self-determination and supportive relationships. National Narrative Shifters collect stories of the hard work and initiative happening in their communities. Using FII’s data to corroborate the stories and leveraging FII’s blog and media networks and channels, they are creating a compelling national story on what families actually need to achieve economic mobility. This story was written by one of our 2019 National Narrative Shifters.
