Enter “The Flossie Posse!” esteemed leader and founder, Mrs. Florinda Harris. She is demure yet strong, soft spoken yet vocal, admired by many yet humble. This wife, mother, grandmother, sister tacitly takes her place as a young matriarch of a burgeoning family. Being the voice of reason, the listening ear, the supportive shoulder, the mediator, the encourager, and the fixer, she stands beside her devoted husband as together they put legs to their dreams and turn their goals into their reality. Florinda initiated and organized Women Helping Empower Warriors (WHEW!) a Detroit FII cohort. During her family’s 2+ year FII journey, she has earned several accolades and promotions in her job. She and her husband moved their family into a beautiful new home. Their youngest son is now enjoying his senior year in high school, employed and looking forward to a bright future. She is a community supporter, regularly seeking out and sharing resources and connections with family, neighbors and friends. Starting with a solid support base and not being afraid to seek out or accept help is key. Florinda says life isn’t easy but when battling through all the trials in life, the unfairness and the tragedy it is important to not try and do it alone. “Posse up!”
The National Narrative Shifters are FII families that want to take the lead on advocating for FII’s approach of direct investment in family initiative and fostering of self-determination and supportive relationships. National Narrative Shifters collect stories of the hard work and initiative happening in their communities. Using FII’s data to corroborate the stories and leveraging FII’s blog and media networks and channels, they are creating a compelling national story on what families actually need to achieve economic mobility. This story was written by one of our 2019 National Narrative Shifters.
