Ericka Castillo – Los Colibris Feed Oakland’s Homeless

My name is Ericka Castillo and three months ago, I started an FII group named Los Colibris with the goal of giving back to the Oakland community by feeding houseless people a couple of times a year. At our June group meeting, we planned out the details for how to go about purchasing the food, cooking, and set the date for the event.

On Saturday, July 1st we completed our first feed the homeless event at various homeless encampments along San Leandro Boulevard in Oakland. We made 50 plates consisting of a generous portion of spaghetti with meat sauce, steamed vegetables, dinner rolls, and water.

Each group member contributed in different ways. Some contributed money, some cooked, and others delivered the meals — some did all three. We are planning another event in the month of October.
