In July, FII families in East Boston launched a 6-month Wellness Challenge and invited their broader community to participate.
The idea of the challenge came about because so many of our East Boston families share the goal of improving their families’ health and wanted to work together to make a difference. With the primary purpose of losing weight and improving the overall health of their families, participants share information, updates and announcements on Facebook and WhatsApp groups they’ve created specifically for this purpose. Valuable information about free exercise classes and healthy food resources are posted regularly including one about Fair Foods, where nutritious foods can be purchased for $2 per bag! And they aren’t stopping there. Participating families are working with primary care doctors to schedule nutritionist appointments and are hosting a series of events focused on wellness topics, including a ‘how to make healthy snacks’ in September.
Families are excited to participate because they believe the challenge can help them achieve their goal of healthy living. They are especially happy to have the opportunity to participate in a group challenge because it motivates them to fully engage. In addition, prizes are available for those who place first, second, and third based on progress toward goals and include a $60 contribution toward a one year family membership at the BCYF Community Center in East Boston and $50 cash prizes for second and third place.
Elsa Flores, who is one of the challenge organizers said, “I am participating but not competing. As the leader of the challenge, I don’t want prizes; I want the opportunity for the other families.”
